PHYSICAL AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF BLUE TOPAZ

Topaz is a mineral from the silicate family. Its chemical formula is: Al2 SiO4 (F, OH) 2. With its beautiful glassy sheen, it is transparent to translucent and comes in all colors from colorless to green and brown, including yellow, gold, pink… and blue. Some blue topazes used in jewelry are colorless gems irradiated to obtain an intense blue tint. The hardness of topaz is high (8 on the Mohs scale), its density varies from 3.49 to 3.57. Its crystal system is orthorhombic, its fracture conchoidal, and it is found in crystals, grainy aggregates, impregnations and pebbles. Topaz sometimes has a golden yellow, cream or green luminescence.

BLUE TOPAZ COLOR

Naturally blue topazes are generally a pale, soft blue, while treated stones can show very intense blues. Some shades have names, the “Sky blue” have a soft hue close to that of Aquamarine, the “Swiss Blue” are the bright blue of a summer sky; the “London blue” are blue-gray.

 MAIN DEPOSITS OF BLUE TOPAZ

Blue topaz crystals grew in pegmatites, and in quartz veins formed at high temperatures.

In Colorado, pale blue topaz is harvested, notably at Pikes Peak and El Paso. They are associated with amazonites and phenacites. On the Jos Plateau in Nigeria, beautiful blue topazes are mined along with others that are colorless. Beautiful pale blue gems come from Zimbabwe, in Somabule. In Western Australia, near Coolgardie, there are blue crystals of nearly a kilo. Superb 5 cm long blue topazes are quarried near Drammen in Norway. In the Baikal region, in Siberia, there are also topazes of a very beautiful bluish hue, very transparent.

OUR GEMOLOGIST’S ADVICE: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BLUE TOPAZ?

Blue topaz is a very pretty stone that may be reminiscent of aquamarine, but blue topaz jewelry is much more affordable. The most vivid colors are the result of irradiation of colorless topazes by gamma rays, or by accelerated electrons, then by heating. Studies, particularly in 2007, have rigorously verified the safety of these treatments for men, so as not to leave any fear in the minds of consumers.

Blue topaz, like other topaz, has very good hardness and its shine can be enhanced by a large number of cuts: for example, step, scissor, pear, princess, round, heart, in oval and many others.

METALS ASSOCIATED WITH BLUE TOPAZ IN JEWELRY

The blue topazes with the brightest shades have enough character to go well with all metals: white, yellow, pink or black gold, silver, platinum… The natural varieties, often paler, will be enhanced by silver metals.

STORIES AND LEGENDS AROUND BLUE TOPAZ

The name of the topaz undoubtedly comes from that of the Island of Topazos, located on the Red Sea and today called Zabargad. The name “Topazos” may have come from “Topos Azos”, a desert place in Greek. Another version proposes for the origin of the word topaz the Sanskrit “tapas” or “tupas”, which means fire.

The Egyptians attributed powers to topazes and used them as amulets, as did the Romans and Greeks: the latter thought that they gave them strength and could even make them invisible … While in the Middle Ages, it was thought that ‘they improved eyesight! However, these legends and beliefs were not specifically related to blue topaz.
