1. ORIGIN OF THE NAME OF THE ZULTANITE

The name of this unique stone refers to its origin: the sultans of the Ottoman Empire gave it its name. Its mineralogical name, Diaspore, comes from the Greek word “Diaspora”, which means “dispersion”, due to its disintegration in fire. Zultanite is also known as “Empholite”, “Kayserite” and “Tanatarite”.

2. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ZULTANITE

Zultanite is an extremely rare gem of the Diaspore mineral family, which exists in shades of yellow, cognac, pink or red. The deep reds are the result of a high concentration of manganese. Much like Alexandrite, Zultanite exhibits impressive colour changes.

3. ORIGIN OF ZULTANITE

High-quality Zultanite is currently only mined in one deposit in the world: on the heights of the Anatolian mountains in Turkey, some 1,200 meters above sea level, near the Turkish mine from Selimiye. Its exploitation did not begin until the mid-1980s.

4. HISTORY OF THE ZULTANITE

The mineral Diaspore was first discovered in the Ural Mountains, Russia, in 1801. Gems of good enough quality to be faceted, however, did not appear until the 1970s. Initially quite poor quality, it has for some time suffered from a bad reputation. Therefore, when high quality specimens appeared, it was renamed as “Zultanite”. It has since conquered the international market, notably by making a name for itself on the red carpet.

5. CHARACTERISTICS OF ZULTANITE

The beauty and charm of this little gem lies in its colours, exceptional brilliance and radiance.

Depending on the light, Zultanite changes colour from kiwi green in sunlight to raspberry red under artificial light.

Its colour change is not limited to two colours, and Zultanite can also go through rich champagne and ginger tones under different lighting.

Zultanite can only be perfectly cut in one direction of the crystal, and therefore is one of the most difficult stones in the world to cut. It is the stone’s responsibility to cut the stone so as to minimize material loss while having the best possible angle so as to maximize the colour change effect.

98% of the stone is thus removed during cutting, which makes large Zultanites exceptionally rare.

6. VARIETIES OF ZULTANITE

Zultanite sometimes presents a cat’s eye effect: it is a shimmering effect visible on stones cut into cabochons only, where a band of light is reflected on needle-shaped inclusions, present in some stones.

7. MAINTENANCE OF THE ZULTANITE

Take care to protect the Zultanite from shock, chemicals, heat and temperature changes. To avoid scratches, keep it neatly stored and clean it only with lukewarm water and mild soap. If it is very dirty, use a soft bristled toothbrush and apply light pressure. Never clean your Zultanite with steam or ultrasound.
