THE COLLECTION OF EMERALD RINGS

The emerald ring collection gives pride of place to beryl, this gem with an inimitable green colour that is one of the four precious stones. Raised alone in the heart of a bezel setting or a prong setting, the emerald is resplendent.  This gem appeared several billion years ago has fascinated since the dawn of time and evokes the splendours of antiquity. Let yourself be seduced by its hypnotic inclusions, which are also poetically called “frost”, which make it truly unique and will captivate gem enthusiasts. In central stone or paving, it transforms any ring or rush into a real treasure. On an alliance or an engagement ring it is the symbol of a fulfilled love, and promises renewal, wisdom, truth and loyalty. Emerald is also a popular stone for paving and floral creations. Bringing luck, it is worn on the fingers like a precious talisman and offered to loved ones as a testimony of sincere love. We collect it as a ring or emerald pendant to pass it down from generation to generation. We match his ring with emerald earrings with sumptuous reflections. On the metal side, its deep green colour blends divinely with sterling silver highlight its incomparable brilliance. Thanks to our jeweller, all emerald rings are beautifully moulded in silver. Find the collection of Emerald Sterling Silver Rings in different styles.

Mineralogical characteristics of emerald

A mineral of the silicate group, a subgroup of cyclosilicates, emerald is the most prestigious member of the beryl family. Its famous light-stable green colour varies from pale green to deep green. It is most often due to chromium which is part of its composition or sometimes to vanadium (these are the rare veneniferous emeralds).

Its hardness is 7.5 / 8 on a scale of 10. Transparent to translucent, emerald frequently has crystal inclusions, sometimes carbon which forms a star pattern (asterism). Liquid or gas can disturb it more or less. We give the name of frost to this nebulous aspect and all the peculiarities of an emerald is designated under a pretty name evoking its greenery: the garden.

The birth of emeralds results from the action of magmatic or hydrothermal veins on metamorphic rocks (transformed as a result of pressure or temperature rise). They are found in various appearances in quartz, mica schists and pegmatites. Emeralds are frequently associated in deposits with albites, apatites, aragonites, barites, calcites, dolomites, fluorites and pyrites.

Confusions are possible with other stones of the same colour, encouraged by spurious names which are now prohibited:

  • Green fluorite (known as “African emerald”)
  • Dioptsase (known as “copper emerald”)
  • Hiddenite (known as “lithic emerald”)
  • Green tourmaline (known as “Siberian emerald” or “Brazilian emerald”)
  • Demantoid (known as “Urals emerald”)
  • Green sapphire (known as “oriental emerald”)
  • Grossular tsavoritis
  • Aventurine
  • Peridot

The emerald remains one of the four stones designated “precious” with the diamond, the ruby and the sapphire, even if this name no longer officially exists since 2002. It is usually cut in a rectangle with cut sides, this traditional shape with facets will take the name of ” emerald cut “.

Main places of extraction

Colombia is currently the most important source in terms of volume and quality. One finds there the presence of rare emeralds known as “trapiches” (visible phenomenon of concentration of chromium). There are very old deposits, in particular those of Muzo and Chivor (bluish-green emeralds), or even of Coscuez (yellow-green stone) and recent deposits such as Pita (grass-green crystal).

The mining conditions in the galleries are terrifying:  the poorly ventilated mines are 300 m deep, with a temperature of 40 or 45 ° with the incessant noise of jackhammers. They never stop and the smallest green crumbs are collected from the rejections by a hardworking crowd of adults of all ages and sometimes very young children.

Note that the largest collection of emeralds is in the Museum of the Bank of the Republic of Colombia in Bogotá. We can see a specimen of 1795 carats.

Other places of extraction include Brazil (with emeralds of excellent color), the United States, South Africa (often too light or cloudy), Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia (abundant open pit extraction but average quality), Zimbabwe (since 1955, green shade of yellow), Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Australia, Russia (in the Urals with sporadic production since 1830).

Formerly and for collectors, we can also mention the historic mines of Austria (Salzburg), Egypt (Aswan) and Norway (Oslo).
